Ragini Upadhyay is a distinguished Nepalese artist and the first woman Chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (2014-2018). She earned her Fine Arts degree from Lucknow College of Arts, India, in 1982, and has since been recognized internationally for her contributions to printmaking, including fellowships at prestigious institutions in the UK and Germany.
Throughout her career, Upadhyay has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple National Awards and the Late King and Queen – Birendra Aishwarya Memorial Medal in 2002. Her artistic excellence was further acknowledged with the Kate and Robert Wilson Prize in 1984 and the Best Award at the 100 years of Lucknow College of Arts in 2011, among others.
An influential educator, she has lectured at esteemed institutions in Finland and Pakistan and has conducted talks globally, including at the Helsingborg Museum in Sweden and Bridgewater State University in the USA.
With 70 solo exhibitions across countries such as Austria, Japan, and Nepal, her works are housed in prestigious collections including the SAARC Building in Kathmandu and the World Bank museum in the USA. Upadhyay's art not only reflects her rich heritage but also bridges cultural dialogues across borders, making her a pivotal figure in contemporary art. Her dedication to her craft and contributions to the arts have left a lasting impact both in Nepal and internationally.
Her series Ashes is a powerful collection of paintings was born out of deep personal loss and a profound desire to reconnect with her beloved daughter Shivata and her mother, whom she lost within the same year. Through her art, Ragini transforms her grief into a poignant exploration of life, death, and the bonds that transcend time.
